Plights of women have long been a subject of interest to poets and writers for ages, who have greatly enriched Bengali literature with their timeless works.
Theatre troupe LokoNatya Dal’s acclaimed play Sonai Madhab is a woman-centric romantic tragedy play, which gives the audience a glimpse into how the influential in society try to abuse women.
The play is based on one of the 10 ballads of MaimansinghaGitika. Directed by Liaquat Ali Lucky, Sonai Madhab revolves around Sonai. It was staged at Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Friday marking the troupe’s 38th anniversary, which was celebrated on Saturday.
The play, presented through songs, focuses mostly on the woes of Sonai, a rural fatherless girl brought up by her maternal uncle. How society strangles Sonai’s love for Madhab is presented in the production.
Sonai lives with her mother. She lost her father at the age of 10. She falls for an 18 year old youth named Madhab while a powerful person of Sonai’s village named BhabnaDewan falls for her. Things take a turn for worse when Dewan becomes aware of Sonai’s feelings for Madhab.
Liaquat Ali Lucky, Ruksana Akhter, ZahidulKabir, M A Momin, RawshanAlam, Shohanur Rahman, SuchitraShutradhar and others acted in the play.
