Mostafa Sarwar Farooki’s Shonibar Bikel won two independent jury awards at the 41st Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF).
The film, which has not yet got censor certificate in the country, won Russian Federation of Film Critics Jury Prize and the Kommersant Prize, on Wednesday.
Bangladesh Film Censor Board earlier banned the film’s release, both at home and abroad, after watching it twice on the grounds that the film will tarnish the country’s reputation.
Filmmaker Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, along with Shonibar Bikel cast Nusrat Imrose Tisha and Zahid Hasan, was present at the award-giving programme.
Shonibar Bikel, a Bangladesh-Germany joint production, is the first film in a trilogy by Mostofa Sarwar Farooki. It has been produced by Abdul Aziz from Jaaz Multimedia and Farooki from Chabial. Anna Katchko of Tandem Productions (Germany) is the co-producer.
According to an AFP report, the title of the film translates to ‘Saturday Afternoon’ and dramatizes the July 2016 attack on an upmarket cafe by extremists, who killed 22 of their hostages, including 18 foreigners.
Besides Zahid Hasan and Nusrat Imrose Tisha, the film also stars IreshZaker, Mamunur Rashid, Nader Chowdhury, Intekhab Dinar, Gousul Alam Shaon, Palestinian actor Eyad Hourani, Indian actor Parambrata Chatterjee and others.
