Tropa Majumder honoured
Theatre troupe Swapnadal staged its acclaimed monodrama Helen Keller on Saturday at Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy marking the International Women’s Day.
The troupe also honoured renowned actor-director Tropa Majumder with International Women’s Day Honorary Award.
Tropa Majumder received the award for her contribution to the theatre scene of the country. Majumder has made a name for herself in the theatre scene. She has acted in plays like Payer Awaj pawa Jay, Ondhokare Methane, Dhaleswari Opera and many others. She has also directed a few plays.
Thespian M Hamid and actress-director Nuna Afroz handed over the award to Majumder.
‘I feel deeply honoured to receive the award. It is really humbling to receive it as an International Women’s Day Award,’ said Tropa Majumder.
‘We have been organising International Women’s Day observation programme and presenting the award marking the day since 2012,’ informed Swapnadal chief Zahid Repon.
In the previous years, thespians Ferdousi Majumder, Shimul Yousuf, Lucky Enam, Nuna Afroz, Irin Parvin Lopa and Sadhona Ahmed have received the award. Following the award-giving, Swapnadal staged Helen Keller, which depicts the life and works of late American author-activist Helen Keller.
The play, written by Apurba Kumar Kundu and directed by Zahid Repon, revolves around the struggles and achievements of Helen Keller, who was the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree.
The play also shows Keller as a woman and human rights activist- influenced by Rabindranath Tagore, Charlie Chaplin, Mark Twain, Kennedy, Einstein’s philosophy- who spoke of women’s empowerment, protested at racism and other issues.
Juyena Shabnam played Helen Keller in the play.
